Last weekend of fall 2011

Hello all,

I hope you are all doing well and keeping good spirits.  Work has kept me very busy these past few weeks.  I am looking forward to next week as I will have some down time.

Here is our Christmas tree.

I hope you are all done with your shopping.  I am not done yet.  I have to wrestle the crowds and get it done.  I promise myself that I won't repeat it next year but I guess I wouldn't have Christmas any other way.

Wishing you all a very relaxing weekend.  Have fun.

Madhubani Paintings

I hope your weekend is going well.

It been cold today here. Its expected to rain as well tomorrow.  So, not much gardening work outside and also finished re potting my orchids and couple of cymbidiums. After my chores were done, I needed things to keep me busy at home.

Madhubani paintings have always interested me. Though I am not a talented artist or anything like that I always felt I could try my hand with Madhubani just like I did with Warli. On the other hand, I am sure Kerala mural or Tanjor painting is out of reach for me unless I can trace the image first. :-)  A girl can dream right?

This is how I decided to spend my afternoon after all my work was done. I wanted to try my hand at some simple Madhubani art.  Here is is what I came up with.

This is how the sketch looked before the colors were filled in.

Do you like it?  Should I frame it or leave in the sketch pad?

Its the perfect weather here for chillie bajji, pakodas and apple turnovers.  Eat, enjoy and have a relaxing wonderful weekend.

TGIF

Uufffff ..... what a week it has been. Next week, we get off from many of the routine stuff. This coming week kids are off from school. The mad rush in the morning will not be missed. We get a weekend off from all the weekend activities too.

Have a great weekend every one. I am looking forward to a short week next week.

My first guest post - Glass painting

I hope you all had a very good weekend.  What do you think the medium of painting is?

Beautiful isn't it?  This was done by my SIL R on  glass.   R is a very talented self learnt artist.  She often experiments with different mediums and thus far I have a couple of her glass paintings at home.  When I asked her if she would be willing to do a guest post, she agreed.   I am happy you could do it and Thank you R.  Here is what she writes.

Have you been charmed by the beauty of glass?   Have you wanted to make your home prettier with your very own hand- made stuff?

Then glass painting is for you....

Glass painting,is one of the most simplest and easiest of all other fine arts.  All one needs is glass, glass colours, glass liner and some ideas.

Here are some simple DIY glass art ideas for you.
Materials required:
  • Glass colours (water based/solvent based)*
  • glass outliner(preferably black)/ 3-D outliner
  • fabric glue( optional),permanent marker(black)
  • few tooth picks,a needle
  • a piece of rag
  • finally glass :)
For Glass:  glass sheet, glass cup, an old bottle, jar,OHP sheet or any glass object you wish to paint on.

If you are doing the painting on a cup/jar/ bottle, then you can choose simple free hand designs such as flowers, bamboo, grapevine, fruits, abstract designs, etc....
To try  a framed glass painting, you will have to draw the design on a sheet of paper and trace it on the glass.  If you are not good at drawing, don’t worry. There are plenty of designs available on the web.  All you need to do is to take a copy of the design and trace it on to the glass.
Design being traced onto the glass
After having selected the design and the object, you will have to draw the design on the glass.
Place the design sheet beneath the surface of the glass sheet with the painting surface facing you.  Carefully tape the sheet to the glass on the edges. Make a trace of the design on the glass using a permanent marker.  Remove the background design sheet and place the glass on a clear light background.  Outline the design that has been traced using glass outliner.Make sure that the outline is not too thick.  To make the outline fine, remove excess outliner using a piece of cloth or cotton wrapped around the tooth pick.
Let the outline dry.It could take about 2 to 5 hours.  After it is dry, take a wet piece of cloth (not soggy) and gently wipe off the outline of the permanent marker.  You may use tooth pick to wipe off the marker at narrow areas of the design.  Now it’s time to paint! :)
Colors being carefully filled
Choose what colours suit the painting the best.  Start out with the dark colours first (because if light colours leak into dark areas, it won’t be much noticeable but if dark colours leak into light areas, the painting could go messy).  Keep the glass on a flat surface, do not keep the glass slanted[important],take the glass colour and fill in the paint using the nozzle provided in the glass painting kit.  If you are using water based glass colours, squeeze the bottle gently and let the colour fill** in smoothly.  (If you squeeze the bottle hard then the colour could spurt out and ruin it all).  Spread the liquid (colour) evenly with the nozzle as you cover the area.  As you paint, using a needle, pop the bubbles that are formed.  If not they will leave tiny holes (carters) in the painting after the painting has dried.  Never shake the bottle before use.  It can cause lot of bubbles. Wipe of the excess colour if it has leaked into other areas.  Fill in all dark colours first and let it dry (takes about 6- 8 hrs). After this, fill in the light colours.  If you are confident that you won’t make mistakes like letting the colour leak into other areas, you may fill all colours at once.  To avoid dust formation on the painting, cover the glass painting with a tray/cardboard box until it is dry.
The painting can now be framed.
Painting made by my Niece under my guidance
Tips
  1. To make simple designs more attractive, use glitter outliners or 3D outliners.
  2. To give the painting an embossed effect, fill the area with a layer of fabric glue before painting.Let the glue dry completely before painting on it.
  3. Make sure the design does not involve too much intricacies.Glass painting looks good only when the design is simple and neat.
  4. For simple stained glass designs like flowers, crumpled aluminium foil sheet can be made as background while framing the painting.
  5. Like wise, you may try painting clear wine bottles and use them as planters. (A money plant (pothos) in a clear glass bottle with simple design looks beautiful).
  6. You can paint incandescent bulbs, make a sunlight catcher, a photo frame, lamp shade and much more... :)
*For beginners, I suggest using water based glass colours since they are easy to handle. The painting can be corrected easily when one uses water based glass colours. As you gain experience, you may try solvent based glass colours.
You  can use Fevicryl glass colours/Camel glass colours or a similar kind available at the store.
**Make sure not to make the layer of paint thick (especially water based colours). It can take really long time to dry and can leak into other colours as it dries. The colour must just cover the area and the layer must not exceed half the thickness of the outliner.

Happy Saturday

Today we did a lot of yard work. Finished planting bulbs for upcoming spring. Repotted couple of orchids and some of my patio plants.

While cleaning up the backyard planters along the wall, found a cucumber in the creeper. All these days we were thinking it was a cantaloup creeper. No one planted this and it grew out of no where.

I love such surprises and enjoy such small pleasures life offers.

I hope your weekend is going well.

Weekend gone by so fast

Time flys when you are having too much fun.  This weekend, apart from regular scheduled activities for the weekend, I pretty much was home.  Oh why?  Because I had project on my mind and I really enjoyed working on it.  Here is the finished project.
I purchased 8 inch clay pots from Walmart and painted and decorated it.  Purchased the paint at Lowe's in sample size and used the light green which was at home already.  I wish I had bought a brighter green.  Hindsight is always 20 20.  Right?

Do let me know what you think.  I would love to hear your comments.

As a result of this project, my other plant stand benefited as well.  All my succulent plant collection are now in one place.
I wish you all a very happy and successful week.

Happy Navaratri

Happy Navaratri everyone.  I hope you are having fun and looking forward to all the festivities this weekend.  I have people coming home for visiting my Navaratri Bombe/Kolu/Gollu and take Tambulum.  I have quite a few houses to visit as well.  Having born and brought up in Bangalore, I have never been to Mysore during Dussehra.  We have always visited after the fact to see the illumination of Mysore Palace.

This is the first time I am keeping the Bombe at the behest of my youngest daughter.  This is a tradition I intend to keep.  So, it fell upon my husband to build the steps.  Many useful articles on this from our blogger friends in America.  Here is what he built.

My mom had already purchased Dashavatara set for me.  I picked up terracotta Ganesha from Kalamadhyam in Bangalore.  I purchased the idols of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati in a local store here. Rest is what we had collected over years.

Console table at the entryway also got dressed up for Navarati.

Wishing you all a wonderful Navaratri. Hope you have fun.

Girls at The Key bunch are celebrating their 3rd Birthday.   Happy Birthday "The Key Bunch" and wishing you many more.  I am linking this to September Carnival: A Bit of India in Every Home!

Happy Weekend everyone

This terracotta Ganesha pendant was handmade by my SIL's friend.  It is fabulous, is it not?  I can't wait to use it with one of my Saree's for one of the Navaratri invites.

Its the weekend before Navaratri.  Its always a busy weekend for me.  I hope I accomplish what all I have planned for this weekend.  Wishing you all a very relaxing weekend.

Patachitra paintings of Orissa

Patachitra is a traditional art form of Orissa.  It is done on palm leaves.  The images are carved on the palm leaves.  In olden days scriptures were written on the same medium.  In Kannada we call it 'Talegari' (ತಾಳೆ à²—ರಿ ) otherwise also known as 'talaPatra'.  On my recent visit Bangalore, I was at a art and craft show.  We came across a booth who was selling paintings for Orissa.  When we asked about the beautiful work, man who owned booth was gracious enough to explain it to us.

Artist carve or draw on the talegari and create the design one leaf at a time.   When they are carving a border, the design has to be uniform.  If they make a mistake at the end of the leaf, it thrown out and redone.  Once the pattern on the leaf is finished, they smear kaajal on it to fill the spaces if it a black and white art as shown in the pictures or they use vegetable dye or the mineral dye to fill the colors.

Notice the intricate patten in the right picture
Enjoy the not so good pictures I took.  I wish we had more time and less rain there.
Some of the items which were for sale
We bought the story of Ramayana which is on the far right.   Hope these pictures give you a idea of what we purchased.   We also purchased a Ganesha but it was given away as a gift before I could take a picture.

Do share if you own any Patachitra painting.
